Tilney, part of leading wealth management and professional services group Tilney Smith & Williamson, has strengthened its commitment to the North East by establishing a new dedicated investment management team at its growing Newcastle office.

As part of the move, Managing Partner David Smith and his team have been joined in the firm’s office at Quayside House by experienced Investment Manager Matthew Burgess, who previously worked for five years at Tilney’s Liverpool office. In addition, Angus Wilson has joined Tilney from Brewin Dolphin as Assistant Investment Manager. Tilney is committed to expanding its Newcastle-based investment management team further in the coming years.

Tilney has provided financial planning services to its clients, which include families, business owners and charities, in Newcastle for 10 years and now has 16 people based in city. The launch of the new team, headed up by Matthew, means that clients in the North East will be able to have their investment portfolios managed by a locally based team.

Matthew is a Chartered Wealth Manager and manages a wide range of client investment mandates including charities, business owners and private client portfolios. He graduated from University of Leeds with a degree in Economics and Finance.

Angus graduated from Durham University in 2018 with a Master’s degree in International Relations. Having completed his Investment Advice Diploma, he is currently working towards his Masters in Wealth Management and is an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Securities and Investment.

David Smith, Managing Partner of Tilney’s Newcastle office commented: “The addition of a dedicated investment management team in Newcastle demonstrates Tilney’s commitment to continued growth in the North East. Investment management is the engine that drives financial planning and I look forward to working closely with Matthew and Angus as we introduce the team to new and existing clients. We have long believed in a dual expert approach of combining financial planning and investment management to deliver a very joined up wealth management service, but feedback we regularly get from our clients is that they value the ability to meet with people based in the North East.”

Matthew Burgess added: “I am delighted to be heading up a new investment management team in Tilney’s Newcastle office. David and his team of financial planners have steered the office through considerable growth in the North East in recent years and I am excited to bring the experience I have gained working for Tilney in Liverpool to clients in this region.”
