The S&P 500 was the standout performer in November, as the US equity market tallied up a record of 13 successive positive months of returns – a first in 90 years of data. We will have to wait and see whether a Santa rally helps December deliver the first full calendar year of positive returns.
What happened in the markets?
- Closer to home, UK equities had a challenging month, with headwinds from a deteriorating economic outlook and the strengthening of sterling late in the month following reports of an apparent breakthrough in Brexit negotiations with the European Union.
- European equities also struggled against a stronger euro in November.
- Asia and Emerging Market equities had a more subdued month of returns after a strong year so far.
